It’s Monday, and the first full week of daily designing. This week I’m going to design to the theme of essential elements. You remember the periodic table right? Well this week we’ll meet some of it’s most important members.
First up is carbon. Carbon is the essential building block of all known life, the chemicals in your body are based on chains of carbon. Carbon is also the petrol in your car, the diamond in your ring, the plastic in your cupboard, and, most importantly for today, the graphite in your pencil:

Carbon
Where would we be without graphite? Still poisoning ourselves with lead.
As always, comments are appreciated.

Today’s work is a rather literal interpretation of the digital divide. I wanted to work with a cleaner style. The central pattern is inspired by the op-art movement, and Bridget Riley in particular. Comments are appreciated!

I wanted to start out with a picture of the Earth, as it’s the backdrop for so many aspects of science and the environment. Here it is, in space. I wanted to capture something of its beauty. Style-wise, I went with a grunge/retro feel.

Earth Poster
The retro effects (stars/lines/spirograph) were done in illustrator, as was the earth and the sun. The rest is photoshop with several layers and blend modes. And color halftone.

I’ve set this blog up to chronicle my 365 designs in 365 days, which is sort of a resolution for the upcoming year. I’ve always had a fascination with science and the environment, so my designs will reflect that, being (loosely) based on that theme. This was in part inspired by this article on Smashing Magazine.
I’m looking forward to honing my design skills, and I’d love to have feedback! Join me on January 1st to begin the journey.
